What Paperwork Do You Need to Sell Your Car?

A simple checklist of the documents you need to sell your car — title, ID, lien release, bill of sale, and more. Avoid pickup-day delays.

The single most common reason a car sale gets delayed is paperwork. Get this checklist sorted before pickup day and your sale will close in minutes.

The essentials

Every sale, regardless of buyer, needs these:

  • · Vehicle title in your name (no missing signatures, no whiteout)
  • · Government-issued photo ID matching the name on the title
  • · All sets of keys and fobs
  • · Current odometer reading

If you have a loan on the car

If your car still has a loan, contact your lender for a 10-day payoff letter. We can pay your lender directly and send you the difference — this is normal and we handle it every day. You don't have to pay off the loan first.

Nice-to-haves that can raise your offer

These aren't required, but they help:

  • · Service and maintenance records
  • · Original window sticker or build sheet
  • · Owner's manual
  • · Receipts for recent major work (tires, brakes, timing belt, transmission)

If the title isn't in your name

If the car is titled to a spouse, parent, or deceased relative, contact us before pickup so we can confirm exactly what your province requires (often a power of attorney or executor documentation). A five-minute conversation now avoids a wasted pickup.
