Alberta Vehicle Bill of Sale (Free PDF Template)

Exactly what an Alberta vehicle bill of sale must include, why both parties need a signed copy, and a free fillable PDF you can use today.

Unlike Ontario (UVIP) or BC (Transfer/Tax form), Alberta doesn't issue a government "used vehicle information package." When you sell privately in Alberta, the signed bill of sale is the legal record of the transaction. Get it right and the registry transfer takes ten minutes; get it wrong and the buyer can't register the car.

Below is exactly what an Alberta bill of sale needs — and a free fillable PDF you can use today.

What an Alberta vehicle bill of sale must include

An Alberta registry agent will accept any clearly written bill of sale that contains all of the following:

  • · Full legal name and address of the seller
  • · Full legal name and address of the buyer
  • · Date of sale
  • · Vehicle year, make, model and body type
  • · VIN (17 characters — copy it from the dash, not the registration, to be sure)
  • · Odometer reading on the day of sale, in kilometres
  • · Sale price in Canadian dollars (or "gift" if zero — see below)
  • · Signatures of both buyer and seller

Two original copies — not photocopies

Sign two original copies. The buyer needs theirs to register the vehicle and to claim the GST exemption on a private sale. The seller keeps theirs as proof of the date and price of sale — useful if a parking ticket, toll charge, or photo-radar notice arrives after you've handed over the keys.

Gifting a vehicle in Alberta

Family gifts (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent) can transfer with no sale price — write "gift" in the price field and complete an Alberta Declaration of Gift form (REG3134) at the registry. A bill of sale is still required to document the transfer.

Common mistakes that get bills of sale rejected

Alberta registries see these every week:

  • · Wrong VIN — copy 17 characters carefully, no I/O confusion with 1/0
  • · Missing odometer reading
  • · Buyer or seller name doesn't match government ID
  • · Sale price written as a range ("$5,000–$5,500") instead of an exact number
  • · Whiteout or scribbled-over corrections — start fresh instead
  • · Only one signature — both parties must sign both copies

Frequently asked

Is a handwritten bill of sale legal in Alberta?
Yes. Alberta registries accept any legible bill of sale — handwritten or printed — as long as it contains all the required fields and signatures. Our free fillable PDF just makes it tidier and avoids missed fields.
Does Alberta need a UVIP like Ontario?
No. Alberta does not require or issue a UVIP. The signed bill of sale plus the vehicle registration is the standard private-sale paper trail in this province.
Do I have to notify Alberta Registry that I sold my car?
There is no separate "notice of sale" form in Alberta. The buyer registers the vehicle in their name within 14 days using the bill of sale, which transfers liability. Keep your copy as proof of the sale date.
Do I need to remove my plates?
Yes. In Alberta, plates stay with the seller, not the car. Remove your plates before the buyer drives away — they'll register and get plates of their own.
